Choro das 3 kicks off its 2014 USA tour in Woods Hole on Friday, May 23 in a Woods Hole Living Room. Doors open at 7, music starts 7:30. Please bring $20 cash per person for the musicians, and refreshments for yourself (and a bit more to share) for intermission.
[NOTE: This concert WILL NOT be at Quicks Hole Tavern. It will be in a Woods Hole living room. Reservation holders will learn the exact location the day before the show.]
Choro das 3 played two sold-out Woods Hole house concerts in 2013. If you missed them, now's your chance.
Choro das 3 is three Brazilian sisters and their father. Corina, 25, plays flute and piccolo. Lia, 23, plays 7-string guitar. Elisa, age 20, plays mandolin, clarinet and piano, and she has been composing since she was nine years old. They have studued at the feet of the masters of choro. Eduardo, their dad, plays pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine).
At every stop on the band's 2013 20-state USA tour, Choro das 3 charmed and wowed its audiences. At the Mandolin Symposium in Santa Cruz, with David "Dawg" Grisman and Mike Marshall leading the event, they stole the show with standing O after standing O. In the grand finale, with 120 mandolin players on stage, Elisa earned the Concert Master's seat.
Last year Elisa recorded a solo CD of her piano compsitions on one of the David Stanwood pianos in Woods Hole. That CD -- graced with art work from the Woods Hole area -- is now available from the band.
Choro is considered the "first music" of Brazil. It forms the basis for Samba and Bossa Nova. I call it the ragtime music of Brazil because it has catchy melodies with complex harmonies and counterpoints.
If you missed them last year, here are two recent YouTube videos to whet your appetite:
